QUIT SMOKING ONLINE CAMPAIGN BY BHARATHEEYAM UAE

With cigarettes so cheap and smoking allowed in many public areas, it’s no wonder so many people in the UAE stay hooked on the habit. But with a little help from the experts, you can ditch ‘the cancer sticks’. Andrea Anastasiou rounds up the services and products to help you quit for good

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), someone in the world dies every six seconds from tobacco use, while estimations suggest that one in every two smokers will die from their habit. In fact, it’s predicted that tobacco will kill more than eight million people worldwide annually by 2030. Cigarettes are killers. “More than 50 of the 4,000 chemicals found in tobacco smoke are known to cause cancer and around 200 are poisonous,” says Dr Seema Anand, specialist physician of internal medicine at Dubai’s Welcare Hospital. These toxins create a number of health hazards for women, which include the risk of reduced fertility, cervical cancer and premature aging.
“Women who smoke are three times more likely to take more than a year to conceive,” she says. “Smoking is also associated with five per cent of infant deaths, ten per cent of preterm babies and 30 per cent of underweight babies.”

Of course, we all know that cigarettes are bad for us, but did you know that if you give up smoking before the age of 35 you could have practically the same life expectancy as a non-smoker? That’s a real incentive, if you were in need of one, to kick that bad habit to the curb once and for all.
NEURO-LINGUISTIC PROGRAMMING
HOW IT WORKS
Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is a very precise form of hypnosis, which can help you trigger the release of feel-good chemicals from the brain when you need them, simply by using your mind, so you no longer need cigarettes for that buzz, says Tony Barlow, The Learning Coach. “This is easier than it sounds,” explains Barlow. “Sit back and think for a moment of the most relaxing experience of your life. Spend a couple of minutes thinking about the sights, sounds and feelings of that experience as if you are reliving it right now. When you have finished doing this, notice how you feel. With NLP you can set things up in your mind so the body chemistry is created automatically at the moments you need it – such as the times when you would normally want to smoke. This dramatically reduces withdrawal symptoms and makes quitting easier,” he says.
WHAT HAPPENS
In your first session, there’s a lot of information gathering, Barlow explains. “I will find out how many cigarettes you smoke a day and where you smoke, for example. I also offer you the opportunity to practise how to use your mind to get some instant relief from cravings. Typically, we will go through some visualisation-type exercises, and I will demonstrate to you in the first session how much control you actually have over your body chemistry just by using your mind,” says Barlow. Three one-hour sessions are recommended over a one to two week period. Barlow also asks his clients to send a daily email report for the first two weeks to ensure they are using the mental techniques he has taught them.
HOW EFFECTIVE IS IT?
According to Barlow, quitting smoking is primarily the ability to change an ingrained mental habit. He says that consciously trying to stop smoking without any help is an almost impossible task unless your motivation level is very high. NLP changes the subconscious habit directly so that you automatically don’t feel like smoking. An alternative to this is NLP and Time Line Therapy, which uses a combination of the above and Time Line, where you imagine an internal timeline floating above you that helps you let go of negative emotions and limiting beliefs. Wendy Shaw from Matrix Training Solutions explains how the combined technique can offer quick and lasting results. “We work at a deeper level with the client’s subconscious mind, exploring the client’s beliefs around smoking, which often leads to the identification of an internal conflict. Part of them wants to stop yet a part of them doesn’t, which ultimately sabotages their success. When we deal with the lower level issues, it allows change to happen.”

BHARATHEEYAM EXTENDS ITS SUPPORT TO INDIA AGAINST CORRUPTION- WE ARE IN RAMLILA TO SHOW OUR SUPPORT

Lokpal Bill row: Anna's victory complete

In a huge victory for 74-year-old veteran Gandhian Anna Hazare, the Parliament on Saturday (August 27) is expected to pass a resolution over the Lokpal Bill accepting the social activists; three demands -- setting up Lokayuktas in States, covering entire bureaucracy and citizens charter. Anna Hazare, who launched an indefinite fast for an effective Lokpal Bill on August 16, is expected to end his 12-day long fast later today once the resolution is passed in the Parliament.

The resolution was reportedly drafted by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley in the presence of Law Minister Salman Khurshid.

The government has reportedly given an internal communication that a political consensus has achieved in the Parliament over the issue to Team Anna.

Political parties are of the view that the debate on Lokpal bill can continue even after the 74-year-old Gandhian breaks his fast, added sources.

Meanwhile, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar has insisted that Anna breaks his fast before 6 PM at any cost. According to the spiritual guru, the agitation can continue but the fast must not and should come to an end immediately.

Ahead of the debate on Lokpal issue in Parliament, fasting Anna Hazare today broke his silence of nearly 38 hours and addressed his supporters declaring that he will continue his protest till his last breath for a strong anti-corruption law.

Amid mounting worries over the Gandhian's health, Hazare said he could fast for another "three-four days" and "nothing will happen to him".

Hazare, who did not address his supporters since 8 pm on August 25, emerged on the dais at around 10 am to a loud cheer from supporters who raised slogans of 'Bharat Mata ki Jai', 'Vande Mataram' and 'Inquilab Zindabad'.

"I am not doing this for my personal gain. If it was so, I would not have lasted five days. Till Jan Lokpal Bill is passed, my protest will continue," the Gandhian told his supporters at Ramlila Maidan where he is sitting on a fast.

SUPPORT JAN-LOKPAL Conducted By BHARATHEEYAM in DUBAI-UAE

ANTI_CORRUPTION MOVEMENT & SUPPORT TO ANNA HAZARE

India Against Corruption (IAC) is a citizen's movement to demand strong anti-corruption laws. Lokpal bills were introduced several times since 1968, yet they were never passed by the Indian Parliament. After a fast by veteran social activist Anna Hazare and widespread protests by citizens across India the Government of India constituted a 10-member Joint Committee of ministers and civil society activists to draft an effective Jan Lokpal Bill. The primary focus of IAC movement is to ensure a strong Lokpal bill. In this regard Bharatheeyam's Core Committee Decided to Support the movement of IAC. We request all indian's residing in UAE to support this movement and strengthen the hand of Bharath Matha.

Ban endosulfan- Hunger strike protest by Bharatheeyam

Pressing for a nationwide ban on Endosulfan and India advocating against the chemical’s use at a Geneva convention, Bharatheeyam will lead a day-long hunger strike on 25th of April 2011.

Vande Matharam

India secures several exemptions on endosulfan ban- SO BHARATHEEYAM WILL CONTINUE THE MOVEMENT..

Geneva: Amid demands for a total ban on endosulfan at home, India and a few developing nations Friday managed to secure several exemptions, including a phase out period of 11 years to implement the ban on production and use of the toxic pesticide at an international conference here. "All the exemptions demanded by India and other developing countries, particularly a long phase-out period as well as access to safe and cost-effective alternatives, have been agreed," a senior official of the Environment Ministry said.

At the concluding session of the Conference of the Parties to the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) here a final decision will be adopted based on two draft decisions that take on board India's concerns, the official said.

Endosulfan is widely used in cultivation of several agricultural crops. After intense negotiations over the last five days as to how the Parties to the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants must deal with endosulfans, India and other developing countries such as Indonesia have agreed to join the "consensus" because the two draft decisions fully address all their concerns, said another developing country official.

Under draft A, the parties to the Stockholm convention on POPs have agreed to include endosulfan in Annex A of banned organic chemicals. Once the parties adopt the decision to include endosulfan in the Annex A, they will have a period eleven years- in two instalments- to phase out the use and ban of endosulfan which is currently used in the cultivation of about 15-20 crops such as cotton, coffee and maize. The second draft deals with a work programme in which countries heavily dependent on the production and use of endosulfan until now will be provided "safe and cost-effective alternatives that would include technical assistance as well as access to latest scientific know-how", the official said. These two draft decisions are expected to be merged during the final session in the evening.

Even as Karnataka & Kerala Chief Ministers raised the political heat by calling for the immediate ban of endosulfan, the central government adopted a cautious position that all aspects relating to this deadly pesticide must be properly examined and decided through consensus.

In addition to endosulfan, there will be eight other new other PoPs that will be included in the Annex A due to several harmful effects on the environment, and bioaccumulation in organisms (increases in concentration up the food chain). India adopted a tough negotiating position on endosulfan in the face of intense domestic political agitations as well as attempts by European countries to steamroll a decision with few exemptions.

Several developing countries also called for "exceptions" and unimpeded access to alternatives in the event endosulfan is included in Annex A list of chemicals by the Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee (POPRC).

Initially, India raise opposition to the inclusion of the recommendation to include endosulfan in Annex A by the Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee (POPRC). Chemicals listed in Annex A are banned for production and use due to the threat they pose to living beings, particularly environment.

In its review meeting last year, POPRC included endosulfan in Annex A. India said a decision on endosulfan must be based on "consensus" as per the practice in all multilateral meetings. Given the differences between the industrialised countries on one side who want the ban of production and use of endosulfan, and developing countries who are demanding technical and financial assistance as well as transfer of technology during the phase-out period, the COP5 has constituted a contact group to examine all the issues and suggest its recommendations.

International Women's Day Celebration

International Women's Day Celebration

“There is no chance for the welfare of the world unless the condition of women is improved." Swami Vivekananda.

International Women's Day (IWD), originally called International Working Women’s Day is marked on the 8th of March every year. It is a major day of global celebration of women. In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for women's economic, political and social achievements.
“You can judge the condition of a nation by looking at the status of its women”.. These are the words of the first Prime Minister of India, Late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Women’s day is a special day dedicated to women. This is the day on which women are recognized for their contribution in the society.
In ancient India the culture was based on Vedas and called Vedic culture. In those times women were revered and respected. But as India had major cultural changes and the modern society is marked with corruption. Women are the worst sufferers. As a result the society is marred with heinous crimes against women, including female infanticide, rape, dowry deaths, etc. The condition of women has become pathetic and this spurred women to become vocal for campaigning the need for women empowerment.
On the women’s day several programs are conducted throughout the country. In this regard, Bharatheeyam Dubai also decided to celebrate Women’s Day, which can deliver our gratitude towards women.

NATIONAL YOUTH DAY

Swami Vivekananda's birthday, according to the Indian Almanac (Vishuddha Siddhanta Almanac) is on Pausha Krishna Saptami tithi, which falls on different dates in the English Calendar every year. This is observed in various centres of Ramakrishna Math and Mission in a traditional Hindu manner which includes mangalarati, special worship, homa (fire-ritual), meditation, devotional songs, religious discourses and sandhyarati (vesper service at evenings).

The National Youth Day is observed all over India at schools and colleges, with processions, speeches, recitations, music, youth conventions, seminars, Yogasanas, presentations, competitions in essay-writing, recitations and sports on 12 January every year.

Swami Vivekananda's lectures and writings, deriving their inspiration from Indian spiritual tradition and the broad outlook of his Master Sri Ramakrishna, are a source of inspiration and have motivated numerous youth organizations, study circles and service projects involving the youth. All his teachings can be found in The Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda, in nine volumes, published by Advaita Ashrama, Kolkata
